A Brief History of
Huffman Memorial United Methodist Church
Although
the St. Joseph area was Indian Territory until 1839, Methodist
preachers had been appointed to the area since 1832. The group of
people who would eventually become the first building blocks for this
church were organized as a "class" in 1889 in the tradition of John
Wesley. Then in 1890 they were officially organized as Huffman Memorial
Methodist Episcopal Church, being named for a pioneer Methodist
missionary, the Reverend Samuel Huffman. The Reverend Charles Miller
was the church's first pastor. The first service was held January 14,
1891. However, the congregation needed a building.
Through
the influence of one of Rev. Huffman's daughters and her husband, land
was purchased at the corner of 28th Street and Seneca. A building was
erected and dedicated on June 21, 1891.
Twenty-five
years later, Pastor Charles Petree led the congregation to a new church
at 28th and Renick while singing “Onward Christian
Soldiers”. In 1956 an Education Annex was added, under the direction of
Reverend Hauser Winter.
In
1974, under leadership of Reverend Jay Purviance, a new sanctuary was completed which
included a large narthex, office,
and parlor/library space. The lower
level included a kitchen and dining room. The project was dedicated and
the mortgage burned on November 9, 1986, with the Reverend Ralph
LaForge as pastor.
A
gift from the daughter of
Reverend Petree made possible the renovation
of the old balcony, installation of a fire escape and classroom space
in 1976.
The
church celebrated its centennial year in 1990, under the direction of
the Reverend Ronald E. Wood, Jr. All living past pastors were present
for the celebration.
Under
the direction of Reverend Wood, two lots were purchased for parking
space.
Construction
of the new Enrichment Center began
on September 21, 2001 under the leadership of Rev. Russell Standlee.
